Used diapers smell terrible, but if you sprinkle some diaper powder in the diaper before rolling it up, you won’t have that smell. This unique deodorizing powder was invented by Regina Crisci and landed a deal with Mark Cuban on Shark Tank. As of 2024, diaper powder is estimated to be worth $300,000.
Regina Crisci’s Background
Regina Crisci currently resides in Winterville, North Carolina, but lived in Bangsboro, Maryland, where she completed high school. She began her nursing studies in Italy and eventually completed her studies at Frederick Community College.
In 2014, Regina received her professional license and began working at Meritus Medical Center. A few years later, she worked as a travel nurse, filling temporary positions in areas of high demand. She and her husband, Bobby, had a son named Maddox, who inspired her to become an entrepreneur.
The origin of diaper dust
While caring for Maddox, Chrissy found the smell of her son’s diapers unbearable. She wanted to find a solution, and when the pandemic hit, she had her chance.
One mom tried different formulas and found the right combination of sodium bicarbonate and activated charcoal. Crisci mixed the ingredients by hand in her backyard composter, and diaper powder was born.
This is the first diaper deodorizing powder on the market, launched in 2020. The founders sold the product to friends and family before launching online. However, after a few months in business, sales were only $3,000.
Shark Tank Appearance
In 2022, Regina Crisci’s income was low because the startup was just a side job. Plus, she had no idea how to navigate the industry and desperately needed a mentor. The nurse appeared on Shark Tank Season 13, seeking $75,000 for a 40% stake.
The sharks tested the product with diapers with mischief spray and were convinced it worked. However, after hearing about the sales, they became hesitant. One by one, the sharks dropped out, believing that the startup was investing too early. Emma Greider suggested that she work with “mom influencers” to promote the product.
Only Mark Cuban did not go out. He was a little hesitant at first, but was moved by Regina’s enthusiasm. Cuban kindly agreed to Regina’s request.
After Shark Tank
After the show aired, orders for Diaper Dust surged. The founders were not prepared for this surge and they sold out quickly. As a result, the company experienced supply chain issues.
She’s handling it well, under the guidance of Mark Cuban and his team. You can buy Diaper Dust now on Amazon and its official website, TheDiaperDust.com. The product has 170 reviews on Amazon and a 4.5-star rating. All the reviews are positive, and it apparently works as advertised.
Sales are better than before, but Regina appears to still be a full-time nurse and only runs the business part-time. She is focused on scaling the business and improving distribution. Diaper Dust is currently valued at $300,000. Regina was interviewed by Joe Pardo on YouTube, where she detailed her experience.
