His father, Ramiro Romo Jr., and mother, Joan Jakubowski, raised him to be a “Navy brat” after his father was assigned to the U.S. Naval Base in San Diego.

After a while, the Romo family moved back to Burlington, Wisconsin, where Ramiro worked as a carpenter and builder and Joan worked as a grocery store clerk.
