Madhubala is a legendary Indian film actress who is widely recognized for her performances in Malayalam and Hindi films. Her real name is Mumtaz Jehan Dravid. She is nicknamed the “Queen of Venus”. Madhubala was born on February 14, 1933 in Delhi, British India.
She is undoubtedly the most glamorous actress to ever conquer the big screen; she rose from a humble background to become the most glamorous superstar in the history of Indian cinema. Madhubala entered the film industry at the age of 8. She worked as a child actor for more than five years and made her debut in the lead role at the age of 14 in Kidar Sharma’s film Neel Kamal. Madhubala played the romantic lead opposite rising star Raj Kapoor. With this film, Madhubala announced her entry to the big screen. Just two years later, she blossomed into a truly stunning beauty and starred in the film Mahal in 1949. She literally became a superstar overnight.
Throughout the 1950s, she starred in several hit films such as Mr. & Mrs. ’55, Tarana, and the biggest hit of her career, Mughal the Great. These films showcased her outstanding acting skills in different fields, as well as her charming temperament. However, many people also felt that her charming beauty sometimes overshadowed her acting skills. Her beauty also attracted many Hollywood film producers, and she became the first famous Indian actress to be featured in the famous Hollywood magazine Dramatic Art. In 1952, the magazine published a comprehensive article about Madhubala titled “The Greatest Star in the World – But She’s Not in Beverly Hills”. Madhubala even received many Hollywood invitations from the famous American film director Frank Capra.
Madhubala starred with all the actors in the Bollywood film industry. In several films, she outshone even her male co-stars and she was very famous at the time. All in all, she starred in more than 70 films and became a big star who could never be ignored.
Madhubala died on February 23, 1969 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. She was only 36 years old at the time of her death. She was born to Begum Ayesha and Attaullah Khan. She had ten siblings, including dubbing singer Madhur Bhushan and actress Chal. Madhubala was courted by Bharat Bhushan, Pradeep Kumar and Kishore Kumar. She eventually married Kishore Kumar in 1960, who converted to Islam just to marry her. She died in 1969, nine years after her marriage to Kishore Kumar.
