David John Gilmour was born on March 6, 1946 in Cambridge, England.

His father, Donald Gilmore, was a zoologist and his mother, Sylvia, was training to be a teacher but later became a film editor for the BBC.

The family lived in Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, until David was a baby, before deciding to move several times before settling in nearby Granchester Meadows.
