At school, despite his parents’ best efforts to encourage him, he had trouble concentrating and his grades were poor.

With his hopes of attending college quickly fading, Joseph Anthony Pereira enrolled at Vermont Academy, an all-boys boarding school, hoping his grades would improve.

Although his grades did improve, Perry was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as an adult, which was the main cause of his learning difficulties.

While at the Academy, he first heard songs by Jimi Hendrix, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and The Who, igniting his passion for music.

Profession

In the 1960s, Perry and Tom Hamilton formed The Jam Band, later joined by Steven Tyler, Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford.

The band was called Aerosmith, and although they were initially known as a Rolling Stones knockoff, by the mid-1970s they had created a unique sound that set them apart.

However, after Aerosmith released their fourth album, rockThings then started to deteriorate as drug use caused tension in the relationship.

In 1979, Aerosmith played as a headlining act for Van Halen, AC/DC and Foreigner, but Perry and Taylor’s drug use took a toll on them, and the ensuing argument led to Perry’s wife, Elyssa Jerret, throwing a glass at Tom Hamilton’s wife.

This led to Perry leaving the band and forming the Joe Perry Project, although it never achieved the same success as Aerosmith.

In 1984, Perry returned to Aerosmith and, after quitting drugs, the band hit the stratosphere with several multi-platinum albums.

Everything was going well until 1996, when the band’s manager began pressuring the members to spread false information about each other, an action that nearly led to the band’s breakup again.

Fortunately, they fired their manager soon after, and under the management of the new manager, Perry helped the band create its first No. 1 single, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”, which was included in The End of the Worlda film starring Liv Tyler.
