Joseph Anthony Pereira was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1950 and grew up in Hopedale, Massachusetts.

At school, despite his parents’ best efforts to encourage him, he had trouble concentrating and his grades were poor.

With his hopes of attending college quickly fading, Joseph Anthony Pereira enrolled at Vermont Academy, an all-boys boarding school, hoping his grades would improve.

Although his grades did improve, Perry was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as an adult, which was the main cause of his learning difficulties.

Fortunately, as his grades continued to improve, Vermont College also allowed him to meet students from all over the country, and it was his classmates there who introduced him to rock music.
