early life

Lennox Claudius Lewis was born on September 2, 1965 in West Ham, London, England.

In search of a better and safer life, he moved to Ontario, Canada with his mother when he was twelve.

Lennox attended Cameron Heights College in Kitchener, Ontario, and was active in school sports, playing basketball, soccer, and Canadian football.

At the age of thirteen, he decided to take up boxing as his favorite sport, and after hard training, he became a successful amateur boxer.

At 18, he was invited to represent Canada in the super heavyweight category at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles after performing well at the 1983 World Junior Championships, where he won the gold medal.

The International Boxing Association ranked him as the sixth-best heavyweight boxer in the world at the time.

He reached the quarterfinals of the Olympics but lost to American Tyrell Biggs, who went on to win the gold medal.

After the Olympics, Lewis chose to continue boxing as an amateur in order to compete in the 1988 Summer Olympics.

At the 1986 World Championships he was defeated by Petar Stojmenov of Bulgaria, but later that year at the Commonwealth Games he won a gold medal.

Profession

In 1989, Lewis returned to England to begin his professional boxing career.

After signing with boxing promoter Frank Maloney, he went undefeated in his first 22 professional fights. He quickly rose through the ranks and in 1992 agreed to fight Donovan “Razor” Ruddock.

The winner will face either Riddick Bowe or Evander Holyfield for the title.

Lewis knocked out Ruddock in the second round, leaving Bowie to win his bout against current champion Holyfield. Bowie chose to relinquish the World Boxing Championship title rather than challenge Lewis for the title, and Lewis won the title in December 1992.

He was the first British boxer in the 20th century to win the heavyweight championship, and he successfully defended the title three times.

Lewis lost the title in a controversial fight in September 1994 when the referee awarded Lewis a technical knockout. Lewis stood up at the count of six, but then stumbled forward and the referee said he could not continue.

After losing the belt, he hired renowned boxing trainer Emmanuel Steward to replace his previous trainer Pepe Correa.

Lewis' return bout with Lionel Butler was originally scheduled to give Lewis a chance to regain the title if he won, but the World Boxing Council instead chose to have Mike Tyson win the title.

After Tyson won the championship, he filed a lawsuit in court, requiring Tyson to defend immediately. After the legal dispute was resolved, Tyson successfully defended his championship title in a match against Bruce Selden, but eventually gave up the championship title.
