Return Home offers an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional burial and cremation methods and made an impressive appearance on Shark Tank. Founded by Micah Truman and his mother, Lexi, the company is a pioneer in the human composting movement, a process they call “Terramation.”

According to StartEngine, Return Home was valued at $20 million. Unfortunately, they didn’t close the deal due to the high valuation. The $40 million valuation suggests they didn’t want the sharks in.

What does the company do?

Return Home’s mission is to provide a sustainable, green alternative to burial or cremation. Their unique process transforms human remains into fertile soil in 60 to 90 days, using 90% less energy than cremation. The body is prepared, dressed in a biodegradable robe, and placed in a container filled with straw, alfalfa, and sawdust.

Families may choose to add a personal note or flowers to the container. Over time, the remains will naturally decompose and become usable soil that families can use to create a memorial garden or spread in a dedicated woodland area.

When terramation became legal in Washington State, Micah came up with the idea to “return home.” Micah and his mother, Lexi, delved into the intricacies of human composting and collaborated with soil scientists, HVAC experts, engineers, funeral directors, and embalmers.

The company was founded in June 2021 with CEO Micah Truman. They set out on a mission to spread awareness of their unique cause, visiting various associations and conferences and highlighting their transparent funeral services.

After Shark Tank

After appearing on Shark Tank, Return Home received a lot of media attention and is now expected to be profitable. Since the show aired, they have become one of the top three companies in the human composting industry in Washington state. The company has also presented at various conferences, including the National Funeral Directors Association’s annual meeting.

Their Terramation Center in Auburn, Washington, is the world’s first large-scale human composting facility, featuring 74 custom-made containers. Their commitment to transparency is evident as they allow families to visit their loved ones during the Terramation process and offer on-site interment ceremonies. Their Terramation service costs $4,950, with an optional interment service for $500.

Prior to Shark Tank, they raised $675,911.30 from 388 investors on StartEngine to build their facility. While exact sales figures after Shark Tank have not been made public, the company’s popularity suggests that it is on a good trajectory.
