Widely regarded as the youngest White House communications officer in U.S. history, Hope Hicks has taken a path very different from the center of American politics. The experience has included both key roles and major transitions, demonstrating her adaptability and her ability to influence a field usually dominated by experienced political leaders.
Hicks was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, a wealthy town where residents had no initial plans to enter politics. Greenwich, known as the home of hedge funds, provided Hicks with a superior environment and opportunities. She worked in acting, modeling and lacrosse in her early years. In the fall of 2006, after graduating from Southern Methodist University with a degree in English, Hicks began her career in public relations, which laid the foundation for her unplanned political career.
Hicks’s political career was both accidental and unexpected. While working in public relations for the Trump Organization, she caught the attention of the incoming president. In 2015, she was invited to join his presidential campaign. Despite having no political background, Hicks accepted the invitation and stepped into a high-pressure arena that would take her career to unprecedented levels.
Initially, she served as press secretary during Trump’s campaign. After Trump’s victory, Hicks’ responsibilities increased rapidly. Hicks was named White House Director of Strategic Communications and was promoted to Director of Communications in August. Her experience in these positions was known for her close working relationship with President Trump and the administration’s communications during a turbulent political environment.
In February 2018, Hicks announced her resignation from the White House, a decision made just one day after she testified before a House committee. During this hearing, she admitted to telling “white lies” on behalf of the president. But she clarified that these lies had nothing to do with any major issues involving or involving the Russia investigation. Her resignation marked the end of her first term in the White House, and she has since withdrawn from the political stage.
After leaving, Hicks stepped away from politics and was hired by 21st Century Fox as Vice President and Communications Officer for the CEO in the fall of 2018. In this position, she put her extensive knowledge of media relations and communications strategy to good use, but in a different role than her White House duties.
In early 2020, Hicks returned to the White House as a presidential counselor. She reports directly to Jared Kushner, President Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law. Her return was seen by the administration as a strategic decision to build a senior leadership team in a crucial election year.
Hope Hicks’s rise from childhood role model to senior political advisor is a testament not only to personal achievement but also to the dynamics of staffing political positions, both past and present, in the United States. Her roles have ranged from media management to strategic communications, highlighting her diverse skills and the key role she has played in shaping the public communications used by the Trump administration.
