Dollywood, a theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, known for its connection to country music legend Dolly Parton, unexpectedly announced on May 8 that it would close 4 p.m. earlier than planned for safety reasons due to severe thunderstorms hitting the area. Many visitors were shocked by the announcement, as the park’s normal closing time is 8 p.m.!
Due to the National Weather Service Morristown forecast of severe weather, including multiple thunderstorm and tornado warnings and an expected extended risk period with multiple rounds of storms expected during the afternoon and overnight, and park management issuing multiple warnings early as a precaution; they chose to close early to ensure the safety of guests and staff during these potentially dangerous conditions.
Dollywood’s early closure caused guests to miss out on four hours of scheduled fun at one of the Southeastern U.S.’s top theme parks, sparking concerns about refunds or compensation due to the park’s reduced hours. Unfortunately, so far, the park has not provided specific details on its website regarding refunds for guests whose visits had to be cut short.
Dollywood is a tribute to Dolly Parton and showcases Southern Appalachian culture through attractions and entertainment. Dollywood features thrill rides such as Lightning Rod (the first winged roller coaster in the United States, known as Wild Eagle) and the Dollywood Express sightseeing train, and offers live performances, including country gospel bluegrass, in honor of Dolly Parton’s musical roots.
Dollywood Park is known for its live entertainment such as musical acts, comedy shows, and theater performances held in various theaters within its grounds. These performances showcase Dolly Parton’s legacy while reflecting the local culture – an integral part of the Dollywood Park experience!
Due to Dollywood’s closure, impacted guests should monitor its social media and website for operating hours and refund policies. Weather permitting, the park will reopen at 10 a.m. (local time) on Thursday, May 9. If further assistance with tickets/reservations is required, please contact Dollywood Customer Service directly.
“Dollywood’s unexpected closure highlights the difficulties theme parks face in responding to extreme weather by prioritizing guest safety over operating hours. While disruptions to normal operating hours may be unsettling, these measures are necessary to protect guests and employees from extreme weather. Although this is only a temporary setback, Dollywood remains committed to ensuring safety and providing an excellent experience for families and music lovers.”
