Son of Henry Fonda, brother of Jane Fonda, best known as counter-culture icon Captain America and father of Bridget Fonda, Peter Fonda finally got his due as an actor thanks to his stellar performance as a Florida beekeeper in Ulee’s Gold (1997). After earning an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win for his work, Fonda was finally able to step out of the shadow of his famous family, and gain recognition for something other than his title as the black sheep of the Fonda family.

Born in New York City on February 23, 1940, Fonda, according to his own account, grew up trying to live up to his famous father’s expectations. An exceptionally talented young man, he entered Omaha University as a sophomore at the age of seventeen, without having finished high school. In Omaha, he ventured into acting, appearing in the Omaha Playhouse’s production of Harvey. He then moved to New York to pursue his acting career, first working with the Cecilwood Theatre and then debuting on Broadway at the age of twenty-one in a production of Blood, Sweat and Stanley Poole. His early career took shape in the shadow of his famous father, with the young actor being compared to the elder Fonda in everything he did. His success on stage led him to a Hollywood screen test for the role of John F. Kennedy in PT 109. The role in the 1963 film eventually went to Cliff Robertson, but Fonda made his film debut that same year in Sandra Dee’s film Tammy and the Doctor.

Fonda continued to be seen in romantic roles until Roger Corman’s The Wild Angels in 1966.
