early life

Herjavec was born on September 14, 1962, in Zbijeg, Croatia. Herjavec’s father, Vladimir, had been detained for opposing the communist government, and in 1970 his family fled the war-torn country in hopes of a better life elsewhere.

When Robert was eight, his family moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and later to Toronto, Canada. The family lived in a friend’s basement for 18 months while Robert’s father found a job in a factory to support the family.

Herjavec received a bachelor’s degree in English literature and political science from the University of Toronto in 1984. However, even with a degree, he worked a variety of low-paying jobs, including delivering newspapers, waiting tables, and even collecting debts.

Entrepreneurial Career

Similar to Kevin O’Leary, Robert had an early interest in filmmaking and worked as an assistant director on several television shows. While switching jobs, he got a job at Logiquest, selling IBM mainframe emulation boards, even though he didn’t have the necessary qualifications.
