Career Overview
Before turning pro, John Wall played college basketball at the University of Kentucky, where he made his professional debut against the University of Miami.
In 2009, Wall set the single-game assist record at the University of Kentucky with 16 assists and 1 turnover. In 2009, John Wall entered the draft and even though he was not eligible for the draft at the time, his performance on the court got people talking. The next year, however, he chose to forgo three seasons at Kentucky and enter the NBA draft instead.
washington wizards
Entering the draft, John Wall was expected to be the No. 1 pick of the Washington Wizards, and that's exactly what he was. Wall was named the 2010 Las Vegas Summer League MVP and solidified himself as a skill player from the start.
In his third game, he tied an NBA record with nine steals and became the second player to dish out nine assists in his first three games. His skills continued to shine during his sophomore season when he was selected for the NBA All-Star Weekend Rising Stars Challenge.
Unfortunately, he missed the first few games due to a knee injury at the beginning of the 2012-13 season. However, he came back and finished the season averaging 18.5 points, 7.6 assists, and 4 rebounds per game.
new contract
In 2013, he became a designated player of the Washington Wizards and signed a five-year contract worth $80 million. The following season, he set a Wizards playoff assist record with 17 assists against the Toronto Raptors.
Although his success continued to grow, he temporarily slowed down in 2016 when both knees required surgery. Fortunately, this didn't keep him out for too long, and it wasn't long before he was back on the court setting a career record.
season-ending injuries
After signing a four-year contract extension with the Wizards for $170 million in 2017, he missed nine games due to a knee injury. He then underwent another knee surgery in 2018, which caused him to miss two months while recovering.
Although he returned to action in November, he suffered a heel injury the following month that required season-ending surgery. To make matters worse, he developed an infection and ruptured his Achilles tendon after a fall at home. He was effectively ruled out for the 2020 season as he needed at least a year to adjust.
houston rockets
In December 2020, John Wall was traded to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Russell Westbrook and a 2023 lottery first-round pick. Despite Wall's past injuries, he recorded his eighth triple-double of 2021 in a 117-99 victory over the Toronto Raptors.
While things seemed to be improving for him, unfortunately, a hamstring strain ended his season prematurely shortly after achieving this feat. In the 2021-2022 season, Wall reached a contract buyout with the Rockets, ending his time with the team.
Los Angeles Clippers
John Wall signed with the Los Angeles Clippers in July 2022 and made his first appearance for the team in September against the Lakers. However, in February 2023, he was traded back to the Houston Rockets in a three-team deal. Wall was waived three days after the trade and has been a free agent since, but he hopes to return to the game.
In November 2023, Wall practiced with the South East Melbourne Phoenix as a member of the ownership group. We look forward to him returning to the NBA soon, especially considering he has proven his talent!

When John Wall waived his final three seasons of eligibility for the 2010 NBA Draft, he signed a four-year, $24.1 million rookie contract with the Washington Wizards. Wall received $5.1 million in his first NBA season, $4.4 million in the 2011/12 season, $5.9 million in the 2012/13 season, and $7.5 million in the final year of his contract.
In 2014, Wall signed a five-year rookie contract extension with the Wizards worth $84.8 million. This increased his average annual salary from $6 million to $16.9 million. By the final year of his contract, Wall's annual income was $19.2 million.
In 2019, he signed a four-year contract extension with the veteran in Washington worth $171.1 million. He played one more season with the team, earning $38.2 million, before being traded to the Houston Rockets in 2020. Wall was active with the Rockets in the 20/21 season, but due to a hamstring strain.
In 2021, he reached an agreement with Houston and decided not to play again. A year later, the Rockets bought out his contract. Despite not playing, Wall still earned $40.9 million from the Rockets this year. He also briefly played for the Los Angeles Clippers, earning $4.3 million, but is currently a free agent.
John Wall has earned $276.5 million in his NBA career so far.
Endorsement
Shortly after being selected in the 2010 NBA draft, John Wall signed a five-year, $25 million endorsement deal with Reebok. After three years at Reebok, Wall moved to the brand's parent company, Adidas. He remained with the brand until 2019, earning an average of $5 million per year from shoe endorsements since the start of his career.
Adidas offered Wall a new eight-year contract worth $66 million, or $8.25 million per year, but it was rejected. Wall is clearly not happy with what he's being paid, as other stars, such as James Harden, make twice as much as he does through the brand.
His endorsement income has since shrunk; however, he still earns about $500,000 a year from sponsors such as Hugo Boss.

In October 2021, Wall listed the property for sale with an asking price of just $4.25 million. A month later, it sold for $4.4 million. After accounting for listing fees and property taxes, he likely lost nearly $1 million on his investment.
