Steve McQueen was an American actor who had an estimated net worth of $30 million. He was born Terence Steven McQueen on March 24, 1930, in Beech Grove, Indiana. He served in the United States Marine Corps after turning away from criminal activities as a teenager.
After McQueen was honorably discharged from the Marines in 1950, he began studying acting at Sanford Meisner’s Neighborhood Playhouse in 1952, receiving financial assistance from the GI Bill. His acting career began in 1956 with the feature film Somebody Up There Likes Me. He then worked on television in the Western series Wanted: Dead or Alive (1958–1961), as well as the cult horror film The Blob (1958).
Steve McQueen was best known for his work in The Magnificent Seven (1960) with Charles Bronson and the World War II epic The Great Escape (1963) with James Garner. His performances established him as a lanky, laconic action star. He was known as “The King of Cool” with his “anti-hero” persona of blue-eyed cool on the outside and rebellious turmoil on the inside.
In 1966, Steve received an Oscar nomination for The Sand Pebbles, but he is best known for the 1968 cop and car chase film Bullitt. His other popular films include The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Papillion (1973) and the all-star ensemble film The Towering Inferno (1974). Despite not appearing in any films for the next four years, he became the world’s highest-paid actor in 1974. On November 7, 1980, he died of malignant mesothelioma following cancer surgery at a clinic in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Today, McQueen’s post-death earnings continue to rise by about $7 million, as trendy brands such as Dolce & Gabbana and Tommy Hilfiger and UBS continue to use his image.
