Taguig City Court officials recently issued an unprecedented court ruling, finding model Denise Cornejo, businessman Cedric Lee and two others guilty of illegal detention charges filed by Filipino actor and host Vhong Navarro in 2014. Taguig RTC Branch 153 issued a 94-page ruling, finding the defendants guilty – each facing 40 years in prison if convicted in the high-profile aggravated illegal detention case filed by Vhong Navarro since 2014. Navarro filed the case, alleging extortion and battery charges against Vhong Navarro during the trial of the case, which has attracted widespread public attention since 2014.
Navarro was detained and assaulted by Cornejo one day in January 2014, and accused of attempted rape. The National Bureau of Investigation moved quickly to file aggravated unlawful detention charges against Cornejo, Lee Ferdinand Guerrero, and Simeon Raz, alleging that they participated in a scheme to extract money from Navarro.
Legal proceedings
The court’s decision highlights the coordination between those accused of confining and extorting Navarro, thus establishing the premeditated nature of the crime. In addition, their actions indicate that they conspired to exploit Navarro with the aim of extracting money from him; in addition, the court requires them to pay Navarro civil damages of P100,000 and moral and exemplary damages equivalent to P100,000.
Cornejo and Laz were taken into custody immediately after hearing the court’s verdict, which was quickly followed by sentencing. Lee and Guerrero, on the other hand, were not present during the sentencing, so warrants were issued for their arrests.
The case has undergone many developments over time, most notably in February 2023, when the Supreme Court ordered the dismissal of the related rape charges against Navarro and ruled in his favor, noting inconsistencies between Cornejo’s statements and the appeals court’s decision to use them as grounds for dismissal.
As the legal battle draws to a close, attention is turning to what its verdict means for both sides and how the justice system handles cases involving high-profile figures and any suspected extortion.
