early life
David Michael Letterman was born on April 12, 1947 in Indianapolis, Indiana. His father, Harry Joseph Letterman, served as a flower shop, while his mother, Dorothy Marie Letterman, Mengering, was the church secretary of the Second Presbyterian Indianapolis Church.
David has two sisters, Gretchen Letterman and Janice Letterman. David grew up in Indianapolis on the north side. He is passionate about model cars and racers.
Letterman's father survived his childhood. This affected David so much that he was always worried about losing his father as a child. Unfortunately, David's father died of a second heart attack in 1973 at the age of 57.
David attended Broad Ripple High School and worked at the local Atlas supermarket, while at the time a stock boy.
He wanted to attend Indiana University, but due to his poor grades, he had to attend Ball State University, which graduated in 1969.
