early life

Eric Patrick Clapton was born on March 30, 1945 in Surrey, England.

His childhood was somewhat unusual to say the least. His mother, Patricia, gave birth to Eric at the age of 16, but due to their age, her parents took over his care. Eric grew up thinking of his grandparents as his parents and his mother as his sister.

His father, Edward Walter, was a soldier from Quebec who was drafted into the war soon after Eric was born. After the war, his father returned to Canada but was absent during Eric’s childhood.

When Eric was still young, his mother married another soldier and moved to Germany, leaving her son with his parents.

Eric got his first guitar at age 13, but he found it difficult to learn and gave up after a few months. At around 15, he decided to pick up the guitar again, and it became an escape for him.

He attended Holyfield School and graduated in 1961. After high school, he began attending Kingston School of Art but was expelled due to his single-minded focus on music. But for Eric, this was nothing as his talent for guitar had already begun to attract attention.

After college, he began busking from time to time, and his first time performing in front of people was with Dave Brock.

In 1962 the pair played various pubs around Surrey and at the age of 17 Eric joined his first band, The Roosters.

The band played seven shows in 1963 with Casey Jones and The Engineers before Eric left.

Profession

Eric joined the Yardbirds in October 1963. He played with them for two years until they released their first hit song, “For Your Love”.

Eric left the band due to not getting along with the bassist and decided to pursue other opportunities.

In April 1965, he joined John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, but quit after a year of playing. He then joined Cream, a small band that released six albums before disbanding in 1968.

The following year, Eric formed his own band and played with Ginger Baker, Rick Grech and Steve Winwood. Unfortunately, his new band, Blind Faith, only played for seven months before deciding to disband.

Eric then formed another band, Derek and the Diamonds, and released the song “Layla”. Derek and the Diamonds played for a year before parting ways in 1971 after recording their second album.

Three years later, Eric formed a touring band and recorded his first No. 1 single, a cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff.” After his first solo single, he decided to take a break from the music industry and went to rehab for alcohol problems.

After his release from rehab, Eric released his own film soundtracks and, after winning several awards during this time, released the critically acclaimed album “Unplugged”.

He has performed or collaborated with many stars, including Jimmy Page, Phil Collins, Sting and many others.

Eric performed over 3,000 concerts during his career and retired from global touring in 2015. You can visit his official website to find out what he is up to now.
