early life
Eric Idle was born on March 29, 1943 in County Durham, England.
His father, a sergeant in the Royal Air Force, died in a car accident on Christmas Eve 1945. His mother, a nurse, was naturally devastated, so Eric was mainly raised by his grandmother in Lancashire.
Edel attended St George's Primary School while his mother was still alive and found it difficult to balance raising Eric with working a full-time job.
Eric eventually attended the Royal Wolverhampton boarding school, but unfortunately, Eric did not cope well as he was often bullied.
He later became the student union president and would sneak out to watch movies every Thursday. With not much to do in his host family, he found himself focusing on his studies so that he could get into his dream university.
Eric eventually attended Pembroke College, Cambridge, and was invited to join the Footlights Club, of which he soon became president, meeting future Monty Python, John Cleese and Graham Chapman.
Profession
His first big break came in the children's comedy series Do Not Adjust Your Set, and soon after, he appeared as a guest on At Last the 1948 Show, performing with the cast of soon-to-be Monty Python.
Eric wrote the first Monty Python works alone and achieved incredible success in the early 1970s. After the huge success, all members of Monty Python separated to focus on their individual careers.
He then started his own radio show, Radio Five. Eric created the band Rustles, a parody of The Beatles. The band became a huge success and Eric appeared on Saturday Night Live four times.
The Rustles wanted to make a mockumentary called All You Need is Cash, a collaboration between Saturday Night Live and the Pythons. Eric began acting in movies like Nuns on the Run and Casper. He also began writing and directing his own movies, such as Splitting Heirs.
In 2004, Idle wrote and directed Spamalot, which was released only after the Python team approved it. It is a combination of Holy Grail and Monty Python movies. He has acted in a play called What About Dick?, which was performed twice in Hollywood in 2007.
Eric competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics, where he performed “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” and subsequently wrote and directed a live version of The Monty Python Show, which was a hit with Python fans around the world.
More recently, Eric has done a lot of voice work for various animations and has voiced the audiobook of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He has also created covers for Paul McCartney and The Beatles.
Eric also starred in the film Cinderella alongside Anne Hathaway.
