Fishwife – Making a splash after Shark Tank!

Who knew canned seafood could be so beautiful? With Fishwife, canned fish can become the centerpiece of any party table. Founded by Becca Millstein and Caroline Goldfarb, the company sources ethically raised seafood and has agreements with Lori Greiner and Candace Nelson. After “Shark Tank”, “Fishwife” has an estimated net worth of $4 million.

Founder

CEO Becca Millstein gave the speech herself and got the Sharks' attention. Before starting his business, the Los Angeles entrepreneur had an entirely different career.

After graduating with a degree in history, Becca interned at several entertainment companies and had several roles in the theater department at Brown University. Eventually, she focused on a marketing role at Atlantic Records, a prestigious label in Los Angeles.

Co-founder Caroline Goldfarb is a television writer whose most popular work is “The Sex Lives of College Girls” on HBO Max. When the ladies went hiking in early 2020, they discovered how much Americans love canned fish, but there wasn’t a single canned seafood company in the United States. They immediately knew they had to fill this gap in the market.

Founding Fish Wife

Becca and Caroline launched Fishwife at the height of the pandemic, which was perfect timing as canned goods were in highest demand at grocery stores during lockdown.

The term “fishwife” originated in the 16th century when women sold fish while their husbands continued to fish. The meaning of bold, foul-mouthed women has changed over time. Becca and Caroline related to it, so they made it their brand name.

The company continues to thrive even as lockdowns ease. From 2021 to 2022, Fishwife's annual revenue increased by 200%. Their sustainably sourced and snappy packaging has attracted attention from outlets like CBS and The Detroit News.

Unfortunately, the two women fell out after Goldfarb was sued for refusing to hand over access to the company's website, email or online accounts, Business Insider reported. The lawsuit states that Caroline stopped working for Fishwife in May 2021.

After Shark Tank

Fishwife is having a great year with the debut of Shark Tank. In 2023, the company's revenue was $5.8 million and will easily exceed $6 million in 2024. There is no evidence that the deal with Lori and Candance was completed/maybe the legal issues scared them off.

On their website, you can also find a store locator to see which nearby stores carry Fishwife products in the canned goods aisle. Fishwife's products are now sold in Whole Foods stores in multiple states, including California, New York, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Oklahoma and Nevada.

According to Circana, U.S. canned seafood sales have grown from $2.3 billion in 2018 to more than $2.7 billion in 2023. Many sources indicate that the canned food trend will continue in 2024.

Average seafood consumption in the United States is the lowest in the world. Fishwife’s founders aim to contribute to changing this by continuing to produce ready-to-eat canned fish and educating customers about seafood sustainability.
