early life
Zabudil Judah was born on October 27, 1977 in New York City. Judah started boxing at the age of 6. His amateur record is 110 – 5. He is a two-time U.S. National Champion and a three-time New York Golden Gloves Champion.
In 1996, Judah won the Philippine Boxing Association National Championship, defeating Ishe Smith and Hector Camacho II, but failed to qualify for the Olympic boxing team after losing to David Diaz in the final of the Olympic Trials.
Profession
Judah began boxing at the age of six and compiled an impressive amateur record of 110-5.
He became a U.S. Champion, won the U.S. National Championships twice and the New York Golden Gloves Championship three times.
In 1996, he captured the PAL National Championship and defeated top opponents such as Ishe Smith and Hector Camacho Jr.
He reached the final of the Olympic trials but lost to David Diaz, and despite not qualifying directly, he went to the 1996 Olympics as an alternate.
TKO professional debut
Zab began his professional career as a light middleweight, making his debut on September 20, 1996, defeating Michael Johnson by TKO.
He won the USBA Light Welterweight Championship with a dominant victory over Micky Ward and then successfully defended the title against Darryl Tyson.
Following his title defense, Zab defeated Wilfredo Negron in a dominant victory to capture the interim IBF light welterweight title.
He then defeated Jan Piet Bergman on February 12, 2000, to win the vacant IBF light welterweight title.
To confirm his status, he defended the IBF title five times, defeating Junior Witter, Terron Millett, Hector Quiroz, Reggie Green and Allan Vester.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. In 2001, he lost the undisputed lightweight title to Kostya Tszyu by technical knockout, the first defeat of his career.
Costilla was considered one of the best boxers at the time, arguably the best, but he was defeated by Britain’s Ricky Hatton.
In 2003, he won the WBO light welterweight title in a thrilling fight with DeMarcus Corley.
In December 2003, in his first defense of the WBO title, Judah knocked out Jaime Rangel in the first round.
Upgrading weight class
Zab bulked up and challenged Corey Spinks for the undisputed welterweight championship in 2004, but lost by unanimous decision.
In late 2004, Judah defeated Rafael Pineda by split decision, and in 2005 he won a rematch with Spinks to become the new undisputed welterweight champion.
The following year, Judah defeated Cosme Rivera by third-round knockout in his first fight, becoming the undisputed champion in 2005.
Cosme and Andre Beto have always been rivals, and in 2007, Cosme unexpectedly defeated the stronger Beto.
Unfortunately, in January 2006, Judah lost his undisputed champion status in an upset loss to Carlos Baldomir.
He then lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. by unanimous decision in April 2006, in a fight that also involved a controversial boxing melee.
In June 2007, after a brutal fight, he lost to Miguel Cotto by technical knockout (TKO), and in 2011 he redeemed his reputation by winning his second IBF title.
Comeback
It took him four years to come back, but in 2011 he defeated Kaizer Mabuza by TKO to capture the vacant IBF light-middleweight title.
Not long after, Judah lost to Amir Khan in a unification bout in 2011, going down in the fifth round after being hit to the body.
After his loss to Amir Khan, Zab Judah took on the undefeated Vernon Paris and started off strong, injuring Paris in the first round.
Judah dominated the fight with his punching speed, and in the ninth round he hurt Paris with a left hand and followed it up with a barrage of punches that caused the referee to stop the fight.
Judah’s next fight was against Danny Garcia, originally scheduled for February 9, 2013, but was rescheduled to April 27, 2013 due to Garcia’s rib injury.
The fight with Garcia featured a pre-fight confrontation with both fighters delivering strong technical performances.
In January 2017, Judah returned to boxing, fighting Jorge Luis Munguia and winning by technical knockout in the second round.
A year later, Judah fought Noel Mejia Rincon in Calgary and, despite being injured in the sixth round, won by a 10-round unanimous decision.
On June 7, 2019, the 41-year-old Judah was knocked out by Cletus Seldin in the 11th round, which resulted in him being hospitalized with a brain hemorrhage that likely ended his career.

Zab Judah’s Favorite Quotes
“I don’t understand why it took Floyd so long to try to get a fight with Winkie. I’m the undisputed welterweight champion of the world, only seven pounds heavier than Floyd, and he wants to move up to 154 pounds and fight a guy who doesn’t have a title? I don’t understand it.” – Zab Judah
“I don’t understand why Floyd took so long to try to get a fight with Winkie… I’m the undisputed welterweight champion of the world — only seven pounds heavier than Floyd — and he wants to move up to 154 pounds and fight a guy who doesn’t have a title? I don’t understand it.” – Zab Judah
“Kendall will definitely help us get ready for the Mayweather fight. He punches fast and is a strong, tough kid. He reminds me of myself when I was younger.” – Zab Judah
“Floyd said he never hid from anyone and never would. If he didn’t fight me, he had to explain. Fighters know things others don’t. He told me by looking at me that he was afraid of me.” – Zab Judah
“He’s trying to hype himself up, but he has no intention of competing… He’s a good competitor at 130 pounds. But 147? He thinks too much about it, talking about fighting Winky Wright and me. He’s dug himself into a hole that he can’t get out of.” – Zab Judah
“The game went well. We were prepared for the game. Me, Pernell Whitaker and Uncle Jimmy all worked hard; we had a good plan and we executed it in the game. I was smart out there, using my legs. We knew he was strong, we knew he was coming and he was going to play tough.” – Zab Judah
