The story of Jamie Siminoff, the creator of the first Wi-Fi video doorbell, is one of the most inspiring stories on Shark Tank. He pitched his startup Ring (originally called Doorbot) on the show but failed to land a deal. When Ring was acquired by Amazon, he returned to the show as a guest investor. As of 2024, Jamie Siminoff’s net worth is $300 million.
early life
Jamie Siminoff was born on October 18, 1976, in Chester, New Jersey, and is a pure American, but he has not revealed much about his parents or childhood.
Some sources reveal that his father was a businessman and co-founded a pipe manufacturing company. If that is true, then entrepreneurship is in his blood. He attended West Morris Mendham Public Comprehensive High School and went on to Babson College, graduating with a degree in entrepreneurship in 1999.
Career Start
After graduating from college, Siminoff founded his first company, Your First International. However, the company failed. In 2003, he made a comeback and launched PhoneTag, the world’s first technology to transcribe voicemails into text. In 2009, PhoneTag was sold to SimulScribe for $17 million.
Next, Jamie moved on to Unsubscribe.com, a service that helps users unsubscribe from spam emails. The company raised $2.1 million and was acquired by TrustedID for an undisclosed price.
With cash from both sales, Siminoff hit on the idea of creating a way to answer doorbells without interrupting work. He invented Doorbot, a video-enabled doorbell that connects to the owner’s smartphone.
Road to fame
Initially, the serial entrepreneur created products in his garage. But he realized he would need to raise money again if he wanted to scale up production, so in 2013 he appeared on Shark Tank seeking $700,000 in exchange for a 10% stake in his startup.
Kevin O’Leary offered to loan Jamie the money, but Jamie didn’t want it. Although the Sharks were fascinated by his brilliant idea, Siminoff left the show without a deal. Still, publicity for the show connected him with other big-name investors, including billionaire Richard Branson.
Doorbot was later renamed Ring and acquired by Amazon for more than $1 billion in 2018. Later that year, he received a call from the producers of Shark Tank, asking him to return to the show. But this time as a guest Shark!
Net assets and earnings
When Jamie was CEO of PhoneTag, the company was doing $2 million per year in revenue, and Unsubscribe.com was doing $25,000-$100,000 per year in revenue until Jamie sold it in 2011. These companies were all quite successful, but Ring is clearly his most profitable venture.
The company raised more than $200 million before being acquired by Amazon for more than $1.2 billion. After the sale, Jamie’s net worth is $300 million. According to growjo.com estimates, the smart home company had sales of $415 million in 2017 and currently generates $619.4 million in annual sales.
Unsurprisingly, the entrepreneur founded another company called Honest Day’s Work. In May 2023, Latch acquired Honest Day’s Work for 27 million shares (valued at approximately $22 million).
personal life
In 2006, Siminoff married Erin Lindsay, who, according to her LinkedIn profile, is the vice president of ProductionFox 2000. Jamie and Erin raise a son, Oliver, and live in Santa Monica, California.
