Joseph Clifford Montana Jr. was born on June 11, 1956, in New Eagle, Pennsylvania, United States.

His parents, Theresa Marie Bavuso and Joseph Clifford Montana, Sr., sent him to Waverly Elementary School and later to Finleyville Junior High School and Ringgold High School.

Joe’s outstanding basketball talent led North Carolina State University to offer him a basketball scholarship in his senior year.

But Joe’s outstanding performance on the high school football team attracted the attention of the University of Notre Dame, and he eventually received a scholarship and accepted it.

When Montana entered the University of Notre Dame in 1974, he competed on the freshman team.

The talented athlete beat North Carolina in 1975 and impressed Dan Devine.

Montana missed the first two games of the 1977 season due to a shoulder injury until the game against Purdue. After the team’s success in the final few games of the season, he was named the starting quarterback.
