Lorraine Toussaint is a Trinidadian-American actress and producer from Trinidad and Tobago. In the late 1960s, her mother brought her to live in Brooklyn. In 1978, she graduated from Manhattan High School for the Performing Arts and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The Juilliard School.
Toussaint grew up under the British system, which she found very strict and scary for children. A system that does not recognize children as individuals.

As a leading actress, she is best known for her role as Rene Jackson in the critically acclaimed television series Any Day Now (1998-2002). From 1990 to 2003, she had a recurring role as defense attorney Shambala Green on the legal drama Law & Order.
Lorraine Toussaint received critical acclaim and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her performance in Dazed and Confused. She played the role of the main antagonist in the second season of the Netflix series Orange is the New Black (2014). For the show, she received critical acclaim and won the 2015 Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In 2020, she won the Clotrudis Award for Best Supporting Actress for the feature film “Fast Color”. Toussaint then starred as Amelia Boynton Robinson in Ava DuVernay’s 2014 historical drama Selma.
She subsequently co-starred in Forever (2014-15), Redwoods (2015-17) and Into the Badlands (2018-19). She played Louise in the 2019 horror film Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
