Robert Michael Wahlberg, popularly known as Mark Wahlberg, is an actor, producer, restaurateur, and former rapper who is estimated to be worth $350 million. Wahlberg is also known by his former stage name, Marky Mark, from his time with the band Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Wahlberg moved from music to acting throughout his career with the band Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.
Born on June 5, 1971, in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood. He is the youngest of nine children. His mother was a bank clerk and nurse’s aide, and his father, Donald Edmond Wahlberg, was a delivery driver. After his parents divorced in 1982, he split his time between them. Wahlberg was raised Catholic and attended Copley Square High School on Newbury Street in Boston.
Wahlberg first gained notoriety as the younger brother of New Kids on the Block member, Donnie Wahlberg. Mark, along with Donnie, was one of the group’s founding members at the age of 13 but left after a few months. In 1990, Wahlberg formed Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch with dancers/rappers Scott Ross (Scottie Gee), Hector Barros (Hector the Booty Inspector), Anthony Thomas (Ashley Ace), and Terry Yancey (DJ-T). The group achieved success with the single “Good Vibrations” from their debut album Music for the People. The song, produced by Donnie, peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was later certified platinum. The second single, “Wildside,” peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales chart and #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Wahlberg first showcased his physique in the music video for “Good Vibrations” and most prominently in a series of Calvin Klein underwear advertisements shot by Herb Ritts in 1992, followed by Calvin Klein television advertisements.
He made his feature film debut in 1994 with Renaissance Man, but it wasn’t until 1995’s The Basketball Diaries with Leonardo DiCaprio that he gained critical acclaim. Wahlberg made his feature film debut in 1996 with Fear, and his subsequent films Boogie Nights garnered critical acclaim. He can easily command between $10 and $17 million for an appearance in a film as an actor but commonly accepts lower pay in exchange for a share of the backend gross. Wahlberg is also a successful producer, having served as executive producer on a number of the films in which he stars. He served as executive producer on the HBO series Entourage (2004–2011). He earned $3 million per year as an executive producer on Entourage. Additionally, he serves as executive producer of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and Ballers.
The star is a brand ambassador for a number of other companies, including health and nutrition retailer GNC, where he promoted the “Marked” line of sports nutrition supplements. In March 2017, AT&T announced that Wahlberg would become a spokesman for the company, for which he was reportedly compensated more than $10 million. Consequently, he made the list of the world’s highest-paid actors in 2017.
The former rapper turned actor, along with his two brothers Donnie and Paul, co-owns the “Wahlburgers” restaurant chain. From January 2014 to July 2019, the Wahlberg family starred in a reality series based on the chain that aired on A&E. Wahlberg became a co-owner of a Barbados cricket team in July 2013. In 2015, he partnered with rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs and billionaire investor Ron Burkle to invest in Aquahydrate, a bottled water company.
Wahlberg married model Rhea Durham on August 1, 2009, at Beverly Hills’ Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Ella Rae and Margaret are the couple’s daughters, while Michael and Brendan Joseph are the couple’s sons. His current residence is an estate in Beverly Hills’ gated Beverly Park neighborhood. Wahlberg and his wife purchased one of Beverly Park’s final undeveloped lots for $8.25 million in May 2009 now worth $20 million.
