He was born on September 25, 1944, to British actress Diana Dill and film icon Kirk Douglas. He was raised by his mother and stepfather and spent time with his father during breaks from military school. He learned about filmmaking when he was on leave with his father.
He began his acting career playing a hip police officer in The Streets of San Francisco, which aired on national TV from 1972-1977. In 1975 he left the TV series to produce One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which won 5 Oscar awards. From then on, Michael Douglas became a successful producer and box office star until the early 90s.
