“Thankfully, they have now fully recovered, apart from still being unable to smell,” Jack said. “As you can imagine, Claire and I were relieved. Jack is a doctor working in Manchester and after a few weeks of self-isolation, he has now returned to work. He is waiting to see when he can start working in emergency or intensive care.”

We were quite cautious with Dan at home and encouraged him to eat separately. That being said, now that Dan is doing better, we are certainly less anxious as neither of us have any symptoms and we feel strong and healthy.”

“We are now halfway through our self-isolation and Claire is keen to get back into her exercise routine and do her bit. Every day, we follow a routine of waking up around 7am, similar to our pre-lockdown routine. We’ll do some strength training exercises, such as push-ups and squats, followed by 10-15 minutes of mindfulness meditation. We’ll have a healthy breakfast, such as an omelette, and then I’ll get on my exercise bike and follow one of the HIIT workout videos on my website.”

Maintaining a routine is crucial to the family’s mental and physical wellbeing. Their regimen includes exercise, mindfulness and healthy eating, helping them stay active and positive during quarantine.

“It’s been stressful being at home and worrying about work or health. That’s why we’ve adopted a Mediterranean diet, which has been shown in multiple trials to reduce anxiety and depression, and why we spend about 15 minutes a day practicing mindfulness. There are a lot of free apps like Headspace or Calm, but I also have some great mindfulness videos on my website.”

“Routine is so important for mental health. If you don’t have a routine, it’s easy to get caught up in listening to the news or following the latest news online all day, which is not good for mental health.”

“So we’re also enjoying foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, fermented foods and pickled foods, which all help to maintain healthy gut microbiome levels. The only supplement we’re taking at the moment is vitamin D, which does seem to help with immunity. With many of us staying home, I’m concerned that vitamin D levels won’t be getting the boost they normally would this time of year.”

Aware that limited outdoor activity could lead to vitamin D deficiency, the family took supplements to boost their immune systems. This precaution helped them stay healthy during quarantine.
