Krist Anthony Novoselic was born on May 16, 1965 in Compton, California.

He is the son of Croatian immigrants Kristo Novoselic and Marija Novoselic. Novoselic lived in Compton for a year before his parents moved to San Pedro, an ethnically Croatian neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Novoselic has a brother and a sister. In 1971, his family moved to Washington as real estate costs soared in California. In 1980, his parents sent him to live with relatives in Zadar, Croatia. He returned to Aberdeen in 1981. He is partially fluent in Croatian.
