Todd Gurley is a retired American NFL running back.
Gurley played college football at Georgia State, earning Southeastern Conference (SEC) All-American honors in 2012 and 2013.
The St. Louis Rams selected Gurley with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
early life
Todd Jerome Gurley II was born on August 3, 1994 in Baltimore, Maryland.
His family moved to Tabaro Edgecombe County, North Carolina, where he grew up and attended high school.
He attended Tarboro High School where he participated in several sports including basketball, track, football, and soccer.
Profession
Like Matthew Stafford and AJ Green, Todd Gurley also started his football career at the University of Georgia as a member of the Georgia Bulldogs.
In his first game as a Bulldog in 2012, Gurley rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns, quickly showing off his skills.
After his first year, he was named first-team All-SEC by the Associated Press, one of only two rookie running backs to receive the honor.
He maintained that same pace as a sophomore and was named second-team All-West after leading the Bulldogs in all major rushing categories.
Unfortunately, while his junior year started off well, he was suspended in October and missed four games for alleged violations of NCAA rules.
In his first game back, he tore his ACL, ending his season, which would also be his final season, as he decided to declare for the 2015 NFL Draft.
Los Angeles Rams
In the 2015 NFL Draft, Todd Gurley was selected 10th overall by the Los Angeles Rams (then known as the St. Louis Rams).
He was the first running back selected that year and the highest-drafted running back since Tim Worley in 1989.
In September 2015, Gurley made his professional debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers and rushed six times for nine yards.
He scored his first NFL touchdown in Week 7 against the Cleveland Browns in October and continued rushing.
In his first four starts, Gurley rushed for 566 yards, the most by a player in the NFL since the 1970 merger of the NFL and AFL.
At the end of his rookie season, Gurley was selected to the 2016 Pro Bowl along with Aaron Donald and Johnny Hekker.
Gurley was one of only five rookies to be selected to the Pro Bowl, joining Amari Cooper, Tyler Lockett and Marcus Peters.
Making great strides
The following 2016 season, Todd Gurley struggled a bit, finishing with just 278 rushing attempts for 885 total rushing yards.
However, he bounced back in 2017 after Sean McVay was hired as the Rams’ new head coach following the firing of Jeff Fisher.
In September, he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Month after rushing for 241 yards and six touchdowns.
Shortly thereafter, he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after gaining 215 yards against the Dallas Cowboys.
By season’s end, he had become the 16th player in history to reach 7,050/750 rushing/receiving yards in a season.
After a stellar year, he was named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year and finished second to Tom Brady in the MVP voting.
Super Bowl Loss
In 2018, the Rams extended Gurley’s contract to a four-year, $60 million deal that included $45 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid running back in the NFL.
Gurley caught a short pass from Jared Goff and ran 19 yards to the end zone for the team’s first touchdown of the season.
He was named Offensive Player of the Month in October after rushing for 462 yards and seven touchdowns in four games.
However, Gurley began to struggle during the NFC Championship Game when he ran for 10 yards and a touchdown before Super Bowl LIII.
After the Rams lost the Super Bowl, it was revealed that Gurley was suffering from arthritis in his left knee, which was affecting his performance.
The following season, Gurley finished with just 857 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns before he was released by the Los Angeles Rams.
Career came to an abrupt end
Todd Gurley signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons in 2020 that included a $2 million signing bonus and $500,000 in incentives.
Although he showed flashes of talent comparable to Tyreek Hill at the start of the season, he finished with just 678 rushing yards on 195 carries.
After missing the 2021 season, Todd Gurley confirmed that he will retire from the NFL due to the difficulties caused by arthritis.
Although he has been quiet since leaving the game, there is no denying the skills he possessed at the peak of his career.
