Anthony Frank Iommi was born on February 19, 1948 in Birmingham, England.

Tony's family were Catholic but not devout. His parents were the proud owners of a shop in England and a vineyard in Italy.

Tony started practicing martial arts at the age of 10 because he was often bullied. As a child, he fell and cut his lip while being chased by a bully. He earned the name “Scarface” and as a teenager, he began to grow a beard to cover it up.

He developed a keen interest in music at an early age and initially focused on playing drums, but in order not to disturb his parents, he decided to learn guitar instead.

To earn some money, he began working in a sheet metal shop, and at the age of 17, he had an accident while on the job that caused him to lose the tips of several fingers on his right hand.

After the accident, he made some prosthetic fingers out of melted fairy fluid bottles and played guitar with his left hand. This was the origin of his new playing style, with softer strings and a deeper sound, because it was easier to bend the strings.
