early life
Vincent Lamar Carter was born on January 26, 1977 in Florida.
Carter is the son of Vince Carter and Michelle Carter.
His parents divorced when he was seven, and his mother (a school teacher) remarried Harry Robinson, also a school teacher.
Young Carter was equally talented in music and sports, and his mother and stepfather encouraged him to pursue both careers in order to gain a well-rounded growth.
Profession
Vince Carter was originally drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the 1998 NBA Draft but was traded to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Antawn Jamison.
Carter helped the Raptors reach the playoffs for the first time in 2000 and won the Rookie of the Year Award.
By his second season, he had become an NBA superstar, and at the 2000 NBA All-Star Weekend, he led his team in one of the most memorable dunk contests.
In his third season, he averaged 27.6 points per game and was a starter in the 2001 NBA All-Star Game.
NBA Leaders
In August 2001, Vince Carter signed a six-year, $94 million contract extension, but missed 22 games that season due to injury.
However, it wasn’t long before Carter joined Charles Barkley as the second player to finish a game with 15 rebounds, 15 rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
Although he was selected to play in the 2002 NBA All-Star Game, he missed the opportunity due to the need for surgery, and he played in only 43 games the following season.
In 2003, Carter gave up his All-Star spot to Michael Jordan, allowing the legend to play as an All-Star for the last time.
The following year, the Raptors’ new general manager traded Carter to the New Jersey Nets, where he was quickly disliked by Toronto fans.
Fortunately, he was not discouraged and in the 2005 season, he helped the Nets advance to the second round of the playoffs.
Nets, Magic and Suns
In the 2006-07 season, Carter and Jason Kidd became the first pair since Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan to record a triple-double in the same game.
In 2007, he signed a four-year, $61.8 million contract extension with the Nets and served as captain during the 2008-09 season.
After recording his fifth triple-double in 2009, he was traded to the Orlando Magic along with Ryan Anderson in June of this year, and in 2010 he scored a season-high 48 points.
By the end of the year, he helped the Magic reach the Eastern Conference Finals and was traded to the Phoenix Suns the following season.
While with the Suns, he reached 20,000 career points, becoming the 37th NBA player to reach that threshold.
However, after the NBA lockout, Carter was waived by the Suns, having played in 51 games, 41 of which were starts.
Mavericks, Grizzlies and Kings
Vince Carter signed a three-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011, reuniting with former teammate Jason Kidd.
With the Mavericks, Carter became known for his three-point shooting and surpassed Larry Bird on the NBA’s career scoring list.
By 2014, his career total had risen to 23,010 points, making him the 27th player to surpass the 23,000-point mark.
Later that year, he signed a multi-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies but appeared in just one of the first 12 games of the 2015-16 season.
Regardless, he won the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award for his leadership on and off the field.
The following season, Carter played in his 1,278th game and became the 24th player to score more than 24,000 points.
In 2017, he signed a one-year contract with the Sacramento Kings and was named the most influential veteran by the NBA Players Association.
At the end of the season, he also received the NBPA’s Pillar of the Game Award and the Players’ Voice Award for Most Respected Player.
Atlanta Hawks
After one year with the Kings, Vince Carter signed with the Atlanta Hawks and made his debut in October 2018 against the Knicks.
At this time, he was 41 years and 264 days old, becoming the second oldest starter in NBA history.
He then became the oldest player in NBA history to score 20+ points, breaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record.
In June 2019, he planned to retire after the season and re-signed with the Eagles for one year.
By December, he became the fifth player in history to play 1,500 games and the only one to have played in four different decades.
On March 11, 2020, Carter played his final game against the New York Knicks, hitting his final three-pointer in the final seconds of the game.
He officially announced his retirement on June 25, 2020, and signed with ESPN as an NBA and college basketball analyst.
