Buttercloth – Clothing brand making millions!

America is known as the land of opportunity, which is why Danh Tran set out on the road to his dreams. He founded Buttercloth, a fashion brand that produces comfortable dress shirts. Dahn joins the Sharks alongside his trusted business partner Gary Falkenberg and has a deal with Robert Herjavec. Today, Buttercloth is worth an estimated $5 million.

Chen Dan’s background

Danh Tran grew up in Vietnam and worked in his family's tailor shop as a young man. Despite his parents' wishes, he moved to Los Angeles and studied fashion at Otis College of Art and Design.

To fund his education, he designed Barbie dresses for the toy company Mattel. After graduation, Tran was hired as an associate designer at 7 For All Mankind and later became the lead designer at Hause of Howe.

He worked at the clothing company for two years before taking his talents to Affliction Clothing. Dahn became head menswear designer in 2009 and held the position for more than a decade.

From Tailor Shop to Shark Tank

Like most professionals, Tran always had to wear dress shirts to work, and she hated wearing them. He made it his mission to make dress shirts more comfortable and quit his comfortable job to start a clothing brand.

Tran used his 401k retirement savings to fund his startup. Gary Falkenberg contacted him through a friend and became a marketer. He watched closely as Dahn designed his 6-way stretch fabric and grew the business.

Buttercloth launched in 2017 and former NBA star Metta Sandiford-Artest was one of their first customers and she became their brand ambassador. The basketball player was instrumental in driving sales, with the business generating $500,000 in revenue in seven months.

Memorable Shark Tank Speeches

The clothing startup caught the attention of “Shark Tank” producers, who invited him to apply to star in the show's 10th season. Not one to pass up the opportunity, Danh Tran and Gary Falkenberg came looking to raise $250,000 for a 10% stake.

NBA legend Charles Barkley makes a cameo appearance as a Shark in this episode. The timing couldn't be more perfect, as the founders brought in Metta Sandiford-Artest and showed how easy it is to dunk in Buttercloth.

After introducing themselves and telling their stories, they got down to business. Due to fierce competition in the clothing industry, four sharks have withdrawn. Robert Herjavec offered Danh Tran a spot and offered $250,000 at 25%. Danh happily accepted the offer and had an unforgettable reaction to it.

Buttercloth’s continued success

A year after the series aired, “Buttercloth” appeared in a Shark Tank update segment. Danh revealed that within seven months of the show, the company made $3 million and sold 30,000 shirts! The deal with Robert was completed and he was very proud of what the company had achieved.

Herjavec's background is primarily in technology, so he made a big bet on Tran, and thankfully, it paid off. With Robert's help, the startup launched new designs and collections. They have collections from Herjavec, Jay Leno and Van Gogh! You can find their products on Amazon and Buttercloth.com.

Their comfortable dress shirts have an average rating of 4.9 stars out of 8,021 reviews. In 2019, their annual sales reportedly reached $6 million. By 2023, their annual income should be around this figure. The fashion brand is now valued at $5 million.
