As man's best friend, dogs deserve all the love you can give them. So why give them regular treats when you can serve them a seven-course meal at Doggy’s exquisite dog cafe? The San Francisco restaurant is run by Rahmi Massarweh and Alejandra Vasquez, who pitched their business on “Shark Tank.” After the show, Dogue was worth an estimated $1 million.
Owner's story
Rahmi Massarweh is a chef trained in classical French cooking. Before marrying Alejandra Vasquez, he spent years perfecting his craft under the tutelage of various culinary experts.
They both grew up around animals and they wanted to adopt a dog. They had an English mastiff called Grizzly, but the puppy didn't like to eat the food prescribed by the breeder. After a few weeks, Rahmi started experimenting with making fresh home-cooked meals. This improved the dog's mood, so they continued to serve him handmade meals.
Founded Dogue Cafe
Many people noticed the grizzly bear's happiness and health and asked about the food he was eating. Those compliments prompted Rahmi and Alejandra to open a doggie daycare center in 2015, five years after they got their puppy.
Next, they opened two fine dog restaurants in San Francisco, offering pastries, haute cuisine, desserts and luxury beverages to their canine patrons. The menu is inspired by European cuisine.
Shark Tank Journey
As the number of pet owners in the United States increases, such services have attracted media attention. Dogg has been profiled in publications including The Guardian, The New York Times, CBS News and Business Insider.
Rahmi and his wife passed Shark Tank's rigorous application process, and their unique business helped them stand out among the applicants. Their pitch was filmed on September 13, 2023, but did not air until February 23, 2024. The pair had a strong pitching performance, and of course, Robert got to play with the dog.
After Shark Tank
The Dogue co-founders quickly experienced the Shark Tank effect after the episode aired. Thousands of curious Shark Tank fans flocked to their site. In the weeks following the show, the restaurant was busier than usual and their online store DogueSF.com also saw strong sales growth.
You can visit our branches in San Francisco's Mission District and Dolores Heights. Opening hours are from 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm from Tuesday to Friday and from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday. They are closed Saturday and Monday.
The average rating from 41 reviews on Yelp is 4.7 stars. Items on the menu range in price from $2.50 to $95. On their website you can also find an online store offering ready-to-eat meals and other items. Prices range from $4.95 to $139.99.
In the long term, restaurants may suffer from a weakening economy and will struggle to expand amid competition. Although California is Dogue's main customer base, its online store can cover greater distances. It will be interesting to see if the business thrives or dies!
