Alan Kelsey Grammer was born on February 21, 1955, in St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands, and is the son of Sally, a singer and actress, and Frank Alan Grammer Jr., a musician. Grammer attended the illustrious Juilliard School of Acting and then completed a three-year internship with the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in the late 1970s before joining the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1980.
